Five Free Outdoor Workouts

Cardio Medley

One of the best ways to keep the intensity up in an outdoor workout is to shift between activities. This will allow you to work all of your muscle groups, while keeping yourself working hard. Mixing up sprints with simple high intensity activities can be a great way to start. Choose a landmark, run to and from it, and do 15 push ups. Then repeat, with a different exercise upon completion. Mixing in squats, burpees, and calisthenics such as wall sits or planking is a good way to keep yourself focused on the exercise.

Running

This one is simple but effective. All you need are shoes and a route. Make sure to stay hydrated, stretch, and ensure that you know your route. Additionally, beware of weather. If it is cold, wear layers to keep you warm and wick sweat away from your body. If it is a warm day, protect yourself from the sun and bring some extra water to keep cool. Heatstroke is not a good way to end your run.

Hiking

If you have the time to spare to go on a hike, the payoff can be immense. You can choose a distance and pace to match your ability, and if you find a good trail, you can experience some gorgeous and private views. There is nothing quite like summiting a mountain and feeling a cool breeze on your sweaty body as you look out at the view below.

Sports

This one may require some research or coordination, but many areas have leagues or groups to play sports. If you look around, you might even be able to join one for free. Many areas have public basketball or tennis courts, and parks can be used to play soccer or baseball. No matter your age or fitness, there are likely leagues that are geared for you. Starting to play a sport you have been away from can also help you make new friends and connections.

Biking

While this is not free unless you have a bicycle, getting started can be fairly cheap. Finding a used bike will help you to get into cycling without breaking the bank. Just because some people ride bikes which cost more than a small car, it doesn’t mean you cant find something cheaper. And if you are willing to spend, there are infinite options for customization, comfort, and style.
