News – October 2017

Sandy Springs Extension: Our neighbors to the north are moving forward on the design for the PATH400 connector between the original 5.2 miles in Buckhead and the part that goes through the middle of the 285/400 interchange. This 2.1 mile missing link will run from Loridans right through the former toll plaza and all the way up to Glenridge Drive. Sandy Springs residents got a peek at initial design concepts, and they were enthusiastic about PATH400 coming to their neighborhood. For more information on this part of PATH400 and to learn about public meetings, contact Dan Coffer

Construction update – October 2017

Great news! After several months of wearing people down with my best squeaky wheel routine, we have received approval from Norfolk Southern to get moving on the next phase, from Miami Circle to the back of Lenox Square. We still have to clear pre-construction meetings with both the railroad and MARTA and then you will see some good old fashioned dirt movin’ going on! We have also received our final approvals to move forward with construction on the Adina section from Lindbergh to Garson. We will build these two at the same time to maximize efficiencies. Construction Update

I am happy to report that we will be getting a little construction underway in the next few weeks. It is a small part, on Adina between Lindbergh and Garson, but it is one more bite of the 5.2-mile elephant.

Reflections of an Intern

20170717_112106-instagram-smGuest Column by Abby Kingsley

It has been almost two months since I concluded my internship at Livable Buckhead (LBI), and I learned more in my time here than I have in entire semesters. As a student of economics and political science, I have always been interested in the non-profit sector and sustainability, but I had no idea what each field entailed. Through this internship, I have learned the intricacies of what it means to be a non-profit and witnessed the intense legwork required to implement sustainability programs.

Going in I had very few expectations. Despite my lack of experience, I was overly-confident that I could handle anything thrown at me. To my surprise, I immediately found myself out of my depth. It did not take long for me to realize that I had entered a completely unfamiliar world. Every day I would encounter mysterious acronyms that coincided with my projects. Words like ABBC (Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge) and CID (Community Improvement District) suddenly meant something and were part of everyday speech. With each new project, I was able to understand a little more of their code and eventually apply it myself.

Top Ten Ways To Use PATH400

Denise Starling, executive director of Livable Buckhead, gives us the dirt on PATH400 progress.

herb-path400-smTop Ten Ways To Use PATH400:

  • To get to work – A lot people who live in Brookhaven or Buckhead could use PATH400 to get to work if they also work in this area. A great example – Herb Silver, who lives in North Buckhead and rides to his Sensible Wellness clinic in the Buckhead Village. Be like Herb!
  • Take your meetings to a new creative level – Get the creative juices flowing by taking your meeting outside. A walk along PATH400 provides an excellent change of scenery which is proven to result in more creative thought and is sure to make your meeting more productive while you log those steps.
  • At lunch – We all know we sit too much during the day and our butts are getting bigger as a result! Use the time at lunch to start a walking club or just get out by yourself with those headphones, Spotify and a little 80’s music to get you moving.

Bike Share in Buckhead

Guest Column by Abby Kingsley

As someone who grew up riding bikes and commutes to Buckhead every day for my summer internship, I was intrigued to hear that Relay BikeShare was starting a program in Buckhead. I loved how the program provides a quick, convenient, and eco-friendly alternative to driving. My personal commute consists of taking MARTA and walking to work. And now, by simply downloading an app, I am able to hop on a bike and go wherever I please without sacrificing my routine.

Bike Share comes to Buckhead

Guest column by Anna Sharp

ALS_PHOTO-smOne of my favorite parts of Atlanta over the last few years is really seeing the connectivity in this city grow exponentially. With the introduction of new trails like PATH400 it feels like Atlanta is finally coming out of its weird adolescent years.

The addition of the Relay Bike Share is an added bonus on utilizing the new-found connectivity of the city. Relay Bike Share is a citywide bike share program. Chances are you may have spotted around town already, they are the very hip new baby blue bikes and they are now coming to Buckhead! Three new bike share stations will be popping up this month at; the Lenox and Buckhead MARTA stations (hitting the yellow and red line), as well as the Piedmont Center office park, which really helps link an almost suburban office park to the heart of Buckhead.

Safety & Security on PATH400

path400camerasDenise Starling, executive director of Livable Buckhead, gives us the dirt on PATH400 progress.

A Closer Look at PATH400…SAFETY

Safety on PATH400 has been a consideration from the start.  Let’s face it, if you don’t feel safe you aren’t going to use it – plain and simple. So PATH400 has several safety features that you may not even know are there.

Let’s start with the easy one. Do you always feel like somebody’s watching you? If so, you’re not paranoid! PATH400 is outfitted with state-of-the-art security cameras at all major points of entry…and those cameras are monitored in the Atlanta Police Department’s Video Integration Center. “The VIC” (as all the cool kids call it) is in the same room as the city’s 911 operators. So, should there be an incident (let’s hope not) the 911 operators can take over the cameras and see what is going on. Zone 2 can log into them and spot issues as well.
