Former McClatchey School Site Acquired for Greenspace Along PATH400

Livable Buckhead partners with City of Atlanta for purchase of 1.55 acres

August 18, 2016 – ATLANTA – For the second time this month Livable Buckhead has partnered with Councilman Howard Shook and the City of Atlanta Parks Department to add greenspace acreage to Buckhead, this time at a key site at PATH400’s northern end.  Livable Buckhead has brokered the acquisition of the 1.55-acre site where D.F. McClatchey School used to stand before it was torn down to make way for GA 400. The parcel is adjacent to the Lowery-Stephens Cemetery, presenting an opportunity to integrate the historic site into the user experience along this future segment of PATH400.

“We originally intended to get a small part of the site as an easement for PATH400, but we jumped at the opportunity to add the whole site to the parks inventory instead,” said Denise Starling, executive director of Livable Buckhead. “The combination of the McClatchey acreage and Lowery-Stephens Cemetery opens up some exciting opportunities for activating this area in a way that honors Buckhead history while keeping the forested buffer for the adjacent neighbors. We’re looking forward to working with the surrounding neighborhood to develop a vision for what can be accomplished here.”

The McClatchey School site is the latest acquisition in pursuit of the Buckhead Collection plan’s goal of 106 acres of additional greenspace. Atlanta City Councilman Howard Shook — who is working to ensure each of his constituents is within walking distance of a park – was instrumental in creating the Buckhead Collection and secured the City of Atlanta funding to purchase the McClatchey property from Atlanta Public Schools.
