Nutrition before a workout

Proper nutrition is essential to any fitness regimen. If you are unable to supply your body with the nutrients and energy that it needs, your workouts will be unproductive, or even counterproductive. If you are looking to make improvements in fitness, make sure that you are eating enough food. If you are looking to build muscle in particular, skimping out on meals can lead to your body breaking down your muscle fibers, but not being able to repair them. Eating full meals of calorie dense foods is key. However, make sure that the food is healthy. Pigging out on junk food is not a good base. This will cause your blood sugar to briefly spike, and then crash. What we want is a long sustained release of energy into our system. Carbohydrates are great for this. Additionally, make sure that you are getting the nutrients that your body needs. All of our bodies functions are carried out by proteins in our cells, and proteins are made of amino acids. There are 9 amino acids that cannot be created by our cells, and so it is absolutely essential that we have these in our diet. This is one of two reasons why it is important for us to eat protein. The other is that foods that are high in protein such as red meat, will also be high in iron. Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, the molecule that our body uses to transport oxygen through our blood. A lack of iron will cause anemia, where we do not have enough functional red blood cells to supply our cells with oxygen. Ensuring that we supply our body not only with energy, but with the essential nutrients and molecules that it needs to function mean that it will be able to create new muscle fibers, instead of being forced to ignore or break down your current muscles. And gaining muscle is one of the best ways to lose fat. If we increase our muscle mass, our bodies will constantly be using more calories, increasing our metabolism. So, when you are going to work out, make sure you are providing your body with what it needs.
