Get fit, win prizes by putting in as many steps as possible during May

ATLANTA – April 12, 2018 – If your Fitbit is a greater source of guilt than pride these days, give your fitness routine a boost with BuckheadWALKS! This month-long competition challenges people to take as many steps as they can during the month of May, and gives extra credit for commuting on foot or for attending a BuckheadWALKS! event. Registration is now open on the Livable Buckhead website.

“This is the perfect time of year to get outside and become more active,” said Denise Starling, executive director of Livable Buckhead. “BuckheadWALKS! provides a little extra incentive to do that. We want people to discover just how walkable Buckhead is by getting out on two feet and giving it a try.”

BuckheadWALKS! encourages residents and commuters to compete for prizes and bragging rights on their own or as part of a team. Participation is easy – after registering online, participants sync their fitness tracking device and then walk as much as possible during May. Participants can earn additional points for transit commutes and for attending BuckheadWALKS! events. Complete rules, event schedules and guidelines are available online.

The individual with the most points wins an REI tent (a $250 value) while the team with the highest average number of points wins a $250 Lenox Square restaurant gift card. Participants are also entered into weekly drawings for prizes including gift cards from Farm Burger and Highland Bakery, as well as monthly yoga passes to Corepower Yoga. Participants who post a photo of their walk on Instagram, tag @livablebuckhead and use #buckheadwalks will be entered in a prize drawing for gift cards to Maggiano’s  and Corner Bakery.

Depending on stride, most people cover a mile in 2,000 steps.  Though studies suggest that 10,000 steps per day is a good ballpark goal, many people are more likely to find themselves in the range of 900 to 3000 steps per day.  The good news is that it can be relatively easy to dramatically increase the number of steps you take each day. Handle as many errands as possible on foot, walk to a nearby restaurant for lunch, or take a stroll on PATH400 and you’ll find yourself hitting the 10,000 step mark in no time.
