News on PATH400

New Housing on PATH400 – Housing construction is everywhere in Buckhead these days – even on PATH400! Yep, we are building micro units of housing right there in the GDOT right-20180427_131337-smof-way.

WHAAAAAT???

Ok, ok, don’t panic… I didn’t go rogue and throw zoning to the wind or anything. You might recall the portion of PATH400 between Lenox Road and Old Ivy Road was designated as a wildlife habitat by the Audubon Society, so we decided to take it one step further by adding some housing…for the birds. Thanks to an awesome group of volunteers from Salesforce, we painted and hung birdhouses along PATH400. We even incorporated our Livable Buckhead mission by integrating some materials reclaimed from CHaRM into the designs. Want to add your own? Go ahead – we would love it! The only thing we ask is that you post a picture of it on social media and tag #path400 so we can see it.

How to use the Old Ivy Crosswalk – This one should be a no-brainer, but based upon my casual observation (i.e., stalking you trail users), I have noticed that many of you aren’t using it right and are putting yourselves in danger as a result. This crosswalk is equipped with a 20160404_140257-smfancy schmancy “RFB” or Rapid Flash Beacon…which is geek speak for “flashing lights that come on when you cross the road.”

There are two things you need to know about this whizbang technology:
  1. The lights come on ONLY WHEN YOU PUSH THE BUTTON, and
  2. When you are driving and see the flashing yellow lights it means STOP to avoid plowing down pedestrians crossing the road.
So now that you know these two key things, what do you do? Well, it isn’t rocket science.
  • Trail users…PLEASE PUSH THE  BUTTON every time you want to cross
  • Drivers…JUST STOP.  I know, I know, this is a tough one because yellow usually means slow down. I have raised that point to the big brains who write the manual of uniform traffic control devices (aka the bible of traffic signs) to no avail. But I know that many of the residents of Buckhead have advanced degrees, so I am confident you can figure it out.  Use that pedal on the left and press down lightly – like there is an egg under it.
Goats – They’re BAAAAAAAACK! Well, they will be in the next month or so anyway. As you may have noticed, all of our leafy green stuff is back and a lot of it is the stuff we don’t want DSC_0075-enhanced-sm– INVASIVE SPECIES. Yep, kudzu, wisteria, poison ivy, privet, mimosa and more of these evil invaders are choking our trees and must be stopped! So, we are bringing back our PATH400 defender squad…Michael Swanson and his merry band of hungry goats! They will be eating their way through Old Ivy up to Wieuca and you might even recognize some familiar faces in the herd from our “Adopt a Goat” program from years past. Of course, we have to keep the goats safe while they are with us so they will be protected by the trusty Great Pyrenees and an electrified fence. Admire them from afar to avoid getting a little shock!

Trees – With all of the spring green coming out, you might have noticed (once you stopped sneezing and cleared your watery eyes) that we lost a few trees over the winter. Luckily many of them were under warranty, so we have walked the corridor with the City’s arborist to identify the ones that need to be replaced and will be looking to remove and replant them this fall. As usual, our tree fairy continues to smile upon us! Thank you to the City of Atlanta’s Parks Department.

Loridans Park – Visioning work is underway for the newest park along PATH400 – Loridans Loridans_minimaplogoPark. Park Pride is leading the process to develop a master plan, and the first public meeting is coming up on June 12. Given the unique features of this site — the Lowery-Stevens Cemetery and the former D.F. McClatchey Elementary School – there is a lot of potential for creative uses, and we’re really excited to see what comes of the visioning work! I also urge you to take the public survey.
